This exhibition catalogue traces the African origins of rice cultivation baskets, whose offshoots are still produced in North Carolina today. Reflecting both social and art-historical perspectives, the variety of graphic elements—including formal African art images, historical photos, contemporary paintings and photographs of handmade baskets new and old—were a welcome challenge in the creation of this unusual social history. Florio Design’s work featured seven highly detailed maps, as well as layout and photography direction that maximizes the visual impact of these fragile and textured handwoven artifacts.
